Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare lung disease that primarily affects women.
It is characterized by the abnormal growth of smooth muscle-like cells in the lungs, which can lead to the formation of cysts and progressively impair lung function.
LAM is extremely rare, affecting an estimated 3 to 7 women per million worldwide.
Due to its rarity and non-specific symptoms, LAM is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed as asthma, bronchitis, or other common respiratory conditions.
Early recognition and accurate diagnosis are important.
Without appropriate management, LAM may result in progressive lung damage, an increased risk of pneumothorax (collapsed lung), and other complications.
Current medical management options, including medications such as mTOR inhibitors, have been shown to help slow disease progression and support quality of life when used under the care of qualified healthcare professionals.
